Recommended Reading

As this show was held in a bookstore, we had our performers recommend some of their favorite horror novels for patrons to buy.

If any of these sound interesting to you, please support an indie bookstore or your local library to check them out!

It’s a fun book to read for being both hilarious and gory at times and an easy read for people who like funny and outlandish concepts. Essentially set in a place that is NOT an IKEA called Orsk, a small group of coworkers have to battle the evil forces that try to turn the Orsk into a panopticon of torture. It’s also delightfully funny with lines like “Did you vandalize a Brooka?” And a lot of fun multimedia elements!

Book 1 of a 2 book series from the 2000s following a young girl who moves to Louisiana and finds she is able to see ghosts. Easy to read and a fun introduction into the genre.

My favorite horror book right now is bloom by Delilah s Dawson! Bloom is so incredibly fun and easy to read. It’s a sapphic horror with a dark cottagecore twist. It is a book you can devour in one sitting with a little romance (sort of), a little intrigue, and some gross stuff!

Read this one recently and love the way that the  story and dread unfolds as the mysterious awful pattern comes to light. Feels incredibly real and relevant to experiences black women often face in this county.

I love House of Hunger— it is a beautiful erotic horror romp that puts a wonderful spin on both the Bluebeard tale and vampire novels. It manages to be compelling, unsettling, and deeply heartbreaking all at once.

    Two very different answers, but:

“First: The short story horror works of Edgar Allen Poe, especially The Tell-Tale Heart. His short stories are such classic, haunting literally that still sticks in my mind and has ever since I first read them.

Second: Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, which technically is a sci-fi thriller, the book I think is actually much scarier than the movie. There is much more gore and suspense. If people have only seen the movie I highly recommend the book!”

It had me genuinely paranoid while indulging my love of Mothman.

Anything by Joe Hill. I found The Fireman by Joe Hill particularly frightening post pandemic. Although “Holly” by Stephen King is haunting as well.

It’s a dark book that gives lore to the figure of Krampus and explores the dual nature of people.  Good and bad exist simultaneously within the pages.  If ever you would sympathize with a devil, it would be in this book.

I read it almost 10 years ago and I still think about it. The messages, the characters, the creatures... it's brilliant.

It's a mind screw in the best way.  I can't really say more because it's got a lot of twists.

“This book is a slow burn, but worth the build up. If you have
ever experienced immersive theater, this one is for you! Based off of the interactive experience Sleep No More that was located in NYC for a while!”
